Final Destination 2
David R. Ellis takes over for the sequel to an excellent if not a bit corny original.  The story of this film and the events of the first movie unexpectedly coincide and intertwine to create many surprises and revelations about Death and its plans on Earth.   Ellis is a master of big budget choreography.  He demonstrates his skills  during the first half hour of this film.  There is a car accident that may be the best action piece ever shot.  I was excited at this point, thinking we might have another winner here.  Unfortunately the movie offers nothing else.  It gets bad, real bad.  After a few beers it would probably quite funny.
Neverwhere
Neverwhere is a rather complex story to explain.  Neil Gaiman created "Neverwhere," a six-episode series first broadcast by the BBC. Londoner Richard Mayhew's life as he knows it ends swiftly when he tries to help a hapless stranger. He immediately ceases to exist in the mortal world, joining the citizens of London Below.

To those who have never watched a BBC production this may be a bit of a shock.  Filmed on video, not film, this production looks cheap.  This is too bad as this is one of the better location shoots I have seen.  There are no stages here, this is all location shooting.

I was impressed with Neverwhere.  I loved the book and loved this miniseries even more.  Yes upon first glance this looks like a Dr. Who episode.  It looks cheap, like a play, but is better than most Hollywood productions.  Story is everything.  Gaiman is in the process of writing multiple big budget Hollywood films.  Neverwhere will be released as a film here within a couple of years.
Toy Story 2
I did see this in the theatres but rented it again recently.  A true classic of storytelling and animation.  Almost on my top 10 movie list.  These movies must be seen in the theatres to truly experience their magic.

To those who refuse to see a computer animated film because of the cartoon factor that's ok.  You'll just be missing out on one Hell of a film.
The Crime of Padre Amaro
I rented this hoping it would be as good as Amorres Perres.  Same director, actor.  Young Amaro, a recently ordained priest, goes to Los Reyes to help Father Benito with the duties of the temple. There, Father Amaro meets and falls in love with Amelia, a beautiful, sensual 16-year-old girl -- which leads to his discovering many dark secrets about the local diocese.

This movie takes many daring yet what must have been hugely
controversial chances.  Does it succeed as a movie?  Nope.  Its not very good. It got shelved after being out for less than a week once the Catholic scandals hit our country. The first bad Mexican film I have seen all year.(still better than most American films).  I'm still looking forward to carrera's 21 grams later this year.
I am unsure if this is a Mexican film or Spanish film.  It is set during the Spanish Civil War I believe.  This is a fairly original movie that holds its own.   This movie is good for that rainy day.  Here is a brief synopsis:

Twelve-year-old Carlos (Fernando Tielve) is the latest arrival at Santa Lucia School, an imposing stone building that shelters orphans of the Republican militia and politicians during the last days of the Spanish Civil War. Carlos gradually uncovers the dark ties that bind the inhabitants of the school: hidden riches, sexual intrigue and the restless ghost of a murdered student, who may be the only one to provide resolution.
The Devil's Backbone
The 25th Hour
This is the story of the last 24 hours Monty Brogan (Edward Norton) gets to spend with his two best friends before he goes to prison for 7 years for pushing heroin. As they plan to party the night away in New York City one last time, Monty tries to touch base with his father.

Solid, well-acted, finely scripted story that might have been one of the finest movies ever made if it could have consistently found its spark. It's not that the film was particularly uneven, it was just one of those very good movies that just misses its greatness. Nonetheless, I enjoyed it.
Taxi Driver
I thought long and hard about this.  This is supposed to be an American classic.  I guess I am missing something here because this movie has no redeeming qualities.  I saw this recently with a friend.  We could not think of anything good to say about it.  I liked the location shooting, kinda taking a step back in time.  The characters were cliche's, the pacing was horrible, the music was the worst ever.  The one action seen was original I guess but still boring.  DeNiro is great I admit as he descends into madness.  I really do not care what this movie is trying to say.  If its dull with close to no good writing it does not deserve to be called one of the best.
