The New World vs The Black Robe
First off, The Black Robe is the far superior film. I had not heard of this before Dave brought it over, but this is a film from 1991. The Black Robe focuses on a Jesuit priest and the Native American's reaction to these interlopers. This film depicts the Indians in a brutal nature. In contrast to films like Dances with Wolves or Geronimo the Indians in this film are savage, barbaric and quite scary. This is what makes this a great film as two French and three Hurons get captured by the Iroquois. I am not sure if the Iroquois were actually this brutal, but as a film it adds to the fear once captured. Unfortunately the movie ends rather quickly "The Hurons became the first Christian tribe but were then wiped out by the Iroquois." that's basically how the film ends. I am not sure if they ran out of money or ideas but it was very disappointing to see such a quick ending. My only other problem is a big one. Having a Chinese/French actress play the lead role may not be the best idea. (One interesting note is that the torture scenes in this film were toned down quite a bit from the real historical records.) I can understand why this film was criticised by Native Americans however it uses extensive historical research.
The New World: This is basically The Thin Red Line with a different setting. I felt like I was watching the same film, just worse. Terrence Malick is overated. I bet most people cannot name a good Malick film besides The Thin Red Line.
The movie is beautiful and if you see it you should probably do so in the theaters. Once a film like this hits DVD the length and scope of the shots is often cut.
Why was the film bad? First off it was very dull. I'm all for the artsy films but artsy does not have to mean boring. Second, the waste of good actors was really too bad. David Thewlis, Christian Bale, and Christopher Plummer were not given good lines to work with. Christopher Plummer's best line from the trailer never makes it into this cut of the film. "let not America go wrong in her first hour." He was a totally empty character. Bale is ok but his character is just quite dull. Thewlis was completely misused. Anyone who has seen any version of Pocahontas will know how this story goes. I give this film credit for being very close to the "historical" account of the life of Pocahontas and casting a great actress in the leading role. This just should have been a great film and it was not. Malick kind of dropped the ball with this one. I wanted to like this movie and perhaps my expectations were too high expecially with how good A Thin Red Line was.

Lost
Lost was quite good last night. It was not as good as last week's but the directing and backstory were among the best. I'm curious about Libby's backstory. She probably was a doctor in Hurley's hospital (or patient). She did lie last night. When he asked her if they had met she says he stepped on her foot getting on the plane. If Hurley had stepped on Libby's foot as he was transversing the aisle of the plane...that means he would be sitting BEHIND her...which we know he wasn't because she was at the TAIL end of the plane... her comment is totally refuted because Hurley doesn't put his headphones on until he sits down. Why is she lying??
Is Locke finally turning evil? The episode was about Charlie, however Charlie is clearly a good character who will probably slip into some questionable actions before redeeming himself. Hopefully for the sake of this show being too boring, Locke does turn out to have his own agenda. He's acting highly odd and don't forget where his name comes from. Even MORE provactive though is the developing dynamic between Locke and Mr. Ecko. If we remember back to Locke doing the crossword puzzle, he inserted the word GILGAMESH, when in fact it didn't fit with the horizontal words. Instead, SCRIPTURE was the proper answer, allowing the horizontal words to sync up. So it is one of the more obvious clues establishing Locke fighting against what Mr. Ecko represents. (I know, thats probably wrong but Grimmay loves these.)
This has been a weak season but with three good episodes in a row it is definately making a comeback.

Indiana Jones?
Here are some funny names for the new series:
------------------------------------------
Sorry for the lack of updates. I've been busy and logging some serious hours at work.
I may have some time today if I don't go back into work that is.
One thing I'm happy about is our lack of snow we have had in January. This is a very good thing. Yay for global warming! We've had some brutal winters of late.
I've seen a bunch of movies since I wrote last. Let's see, Underworld 2, Syriana, Munich, Hustle and Flow and a bunch of others. Underworld was cool, Kate was too hot for words yet again. Munich was good, Syriana was not good. and Hustle and Flow was a good film. Nothing here is award worthy but if you have time they are worth checking out.
I need to see The Quid and the Whale, Memoirs of the Geisha, and The New world this week.

When Flaming Mice Attack

FORT SUMNER, N.M. - A mouse got its revenge against a homeowner who tried to dispose of it in a pile of burning leaves. The blazing creature ran back to the man's house and set it on fire.Luciano Mares, 81, of Fort Sumner said he caught the mouse inside his house and wanted to get rid of it."I had some leaves burning outside, so I threw it in the fire, and the mouse was on fire and ran back at the house," Mares said from a motel room Saturday.Village Fire Chief Juan Chavez said the burning mouse ran to just beneath a window, and the flames spread up from there and throughout the house. No was hurt inside, but the home and everything in it was destroyed.

New Years

A new year! I hope everyone had a good time. Seattle Bob was nice enough to have us over for New Years. The food spread was fabulous. I was loving Mrs. Hartman's stuffed bread and the army of chicken legs. My chocotini's were not the best I fear. Chocotini shots have potential!
Anyways, it was a good time. There is nothing like ending the night with a trip to see the giant blown up Christmas Spongebob (sadly my idea but surprisingly people wanted to go) and then finished the night with a Japanese film about snails, a horror film!
Alas, when we reached our destination Spongebob and his army of friends were no longer blow up. Perhaps It was the snow we were getting. Aiden did breath fire again tho to the neighbor's dismay or horror.
