Portland must have 15 Thai restaraunts at this point. I have been to them all. I usually go with a buddy and his wife who is from Thailand. With very few exceptions most of these restaraunts are not owned by Thai people or might have one Thai worker. I finally found some genuine Thai food at Nakornping Thai.

Nakornping Thai is next to the Portland Stage Company. They seem to do a good business before and after plays. They are open until 9 -10PM. There is a nice atmosphere here. The late hours make this a nice late dinner or even a good place to drink. I have eaten here three times and have noticed that there were Thai people eating here, some who had just come from Thailand. Nakornping Thai seems to be a Thai favorite. My Thai friend is impressed that there are dishes no other Thai restaraunt in Portland seemed to serve. The menu is very different, the staff is friendly, all seven employees are Thai, and the delivery options are nice. I see a very nice flatscreen/Karaoke setup. That has some potential. I remember a Thai place in Bar Harbor I used to frequent that had Saturday Karaoke and it was packed.

The salads and soups are really what stands out here. The Green Elephant on Congress seems to get all the recent buzz for Thai food, but Nakornping Thai does salds much better and they are not vegetarian (eww!) I would give this place a try for the salads. They truly are unique. Fried ice cream is a must for me and I also like the stick rice pudding.

In some ways I felt like I was back in Thailand. I met a few Thai people who had just arrived to work here for the Summer. They were eating here due to the reputation. I was eating here another night and some local Thai restaraunt owners came in for food. That in itself is a good sign. The greatest compliment was eating here with my buddy's Thai wife. We have been to every Thai restaraunt in Portland. We have finally found a place with real Thai food and real Thai people.

You know an ethnic restaurant is top-notch if the natives are there by the dozen! I must check out this Nakornping Thai place if I ever make it to Portland. :)

Hello All,
AS A native Mainer who has lived in Thailand for along time. I feel that this is "THE PLACE" for real thai food. Ifelt that I was back in the Kingdom and on my 2nd visit with my soon to be 4 Son what a wonderful time we had! Oh the SOMTAM and everything we have eaten is so fresh and YUMMY as my son says.
So try it and then become a regular! Even though we have to drive 49 miles each way we will try to come once a week if possible.
Stay safe All.
A Mainer with a home in Thailand
